StorySpace – imagining & activity for kids on Christ the King

- IMAGINING “Christ the King” -

We’re going to read psalm 145, which is a prayer to God, who is the King of ALL creation.  And when we read this, I want you to imagine that we are at a big fancy celebration.

Have any of you been to a big fancy celebration?  Like a wedding? or a graduation?  Or a parade? (allow kids to offer things they’ve been to)

The celebration that we are imagining is the crowning of a king – King Jesus!

Let’s use our imaginations now to see Jesus on a throne.

What do you imagine the throne to look like? (wait for kids to answer)

And there’s a huge crowd there, we are there along with everyone else in the world, a huge party to celebrate Jesus as a peaceful King of all the world!

How many people do you imagine are there?  (wait for kids to answer)

Who do you imagine is there?  (wait for kids to answer)

Now imagine that someone stands up to give a speech to say how much we like having God as our king… and this is what they say:

Psalm 145

O God, you are my King! and I’ll thank you forever and ever!

I’ll thank you every day, and keep it up from now to eternity.

God you are magnificent; you can never be praised enough.

There are no boundaries to how great you are.

Even our children’s children will be amazed by what you do;

each generation tells stories of your courageous acts.

Everyone is talking about your beauty and wonderful things you do;

It’s sung about in songs and written in headline news;

You are famous all over the world for being good and for being fair.

This is what your kingdom is based on
and it will last for ever; you never get voted out of office.

Because you, the King, always do what you say you will do
and everything you do is always full of grace.
Because you, the King, always help those down on their luck,
and you give a fresh start to those ready to quit.
Because you, the King, provide for all your subjects,

all of creation gets what they need from you.
So let’s give God the King the credit!

Now and always, here’s to God!  Hooray!

- ACTION – Making a Prayer-Speech to celebrate Christ the King

The person who wrote this speech gets really excited when they look at the way God leads the world in peace, and provides food for all creation, and acts really fair with everyone, but is also really kind and forgiving.

What would you say to celebrate God as King?

What things would you list as really great ways that God leads the world?

What would you say to thank God for the way God looks after all creation,

and looks after you?

We are going to join all of our ideas into a new speech to celebrate God as our King.  You shout them out and I’ll write them down and then we’ll arrange everyone’s ideas into a big prayer-speech to celebrate King Jesus.

*Pictures can also be drawn of what they think Jesus might look like on a king’s throne with everybody around him celebrating, or a picture of what God’s kingdom might look like where everybody gets fed, and is treated fairly etc.

**The prayer that the children create can become the Prayer of Great Thanksgiving for the Eucharist later in the service when the children join the adults around the table.
