Dr. Seuss Gospel Reading

Matthew 9:35-10:23 In the Style of Dr. Seuss

written by Ryan Marsh

Jesus went up and went down

every village and town

teaching and healing

and preaching and feeling

compassion for those

who were helpless and down.

He said to his followers,

who felt for those wallowers,

“Cornocopious and plenty-normous is the harvest,

but pickers and pluckers are fewest and farthest,

so let’s ask the Lord of Big Yields,

‘Hey, send us out to those fields!’

Now, as you go let them know,

‘We’re bringing good news!’

Cure the sick, raise the dead,

slap a hat on hatless heads.

Tell old demons, ‘Beat it, shew!’

Wedge a foot in a footless shoes.

Now, here’s list of items to pack in your bag

in case you might need them on this journey’s lag:

a pair of air sneakers, change of invisible clothes,

one empty pocket where your money wont go,

And if you find there’s no time or have limited space,

don’t worry, just hurry and leave home that suite case.

Wherever you go, and wherever you stay,

and whoever it is you might meet

you’ll find a few folks who will listen and say,

‘Good news? That’s great news! Let’s talk and let’s eat!’

But if the town’s warmest welcome

is smaller than seldom

and their cold shoulders are purpler than redish blue,

just hit the outbound streets

and tell your naked feets:

‘Travel light. Shake it off. Don’t take that dust with you.’

‘Cause it wont be a shock

if you get shackled and locked

in a jail with no chalk to make smudges

Then thrown before courts,

(of course the jury-less sort)

run by two short grudgy judges.

And if your tongue is a tangle

and your teeth jitter-jangle,

Don’t fret for voice screeches

or eloquent-ly-less speeches

For the right gab will be gifted

and your babel be lifted

’cause the Lord of Big Yields

who sent you into those fields

will equip you and loose-lip you

with the words you will wield. “

Now this is the good, no, great news of Jesus Christ!

Praise to you, O Christ!
